Please become familiar with our course syllabus and check this website frequently, as it will have reminders and updates for you. 

 

 

You will take the English 2 final in class on May 31.  Please prepare a full essay in response to one of the prompts below.  You can only bring your book with you into the final but you can mark your evidence and write your thesis in the book in advance.

Read through the first half of chapter 3, through page 138 for class on Wednesday. 

 

DUE WEDNESDAY APRIL 26

Upload your video to Youtube and then email me the link to emily_broyles@dpsk12.net.  I must have it by the end of the school day on Wednesday for it to be on time.  I will give you some time in class on Tuesday to film, but you need to have it rehearsed and ready to perform for class on Tuesday. 

 

Also, please read chapter 2 of Oscar for class on Wednesday. 

 

If you don't finish this historical context research for Oscar in class on Tuesday, then it is also due to me on Wednesday. 

 

IF YOU MISSED CLASS ON APRIL 7:

You need to complete these TWIST sheets on "Because I did not stop for death" (due in class on Friday) and "Daddy".  Your TWIST for "Daddy" is due on Monday.  Your homework is to complete your honors project!  They are due in class on Friday and you will present in class on Friday.  Come talk to me if I can help you and your partner in any way!

 

DUE IN CLASS BY APRIL 17:

Find a copy of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz to class on April 11.  You will not be annotating for me, so you can use a library book.  You must have the book in class everyday for about four weeks, so if you choose a library book you must be able to renew it!

 

IN CLASS ON FRIDAY 3/24:

You will be writing a full analytical essay on the following prompt.  You will have 90 minutes and access to computers to type if you want (you can also handwrite, if you prefer).  You may only bring in your annotated book and cannot write the essay in advance and tape it into your book.  Please email me your thesis by Thursday if you would like feedback on it.   Good luck!

 

Write a full analytical essay to answer the below prompt. Make sure to include details, quotes and evidence.

PROMPT: Select one of the following themes from Arundhati Roy’s novel The God of Small Things.  How does Roy develop this theme throughout the novel and for what purpose?

  • You cannot escape your childhood

Read and annotate chapter 13 for class on Friday.  If you know that you will be out the last week before Spring Break it is up to you to schedule your final essay in advance!

 

DUE TUESDAY MARCH 7:

Read and annotate chapters 11 and 12 for class on Tuesday.  Make sure you are also working on your honors reading, if you are in honors (the info is in the honors tab under English 2, if you need to see it again)!

 

DUE WEDNESDAY MARCH 1:

Read and annotate chapters 8, 9 and 10 for class on Wednesday.

DUE WEDNESDAY 2/22:

Read and annotate chapter 5, 6 and 7 for class on Wednesday.  If you missed class today you need to complete questions #3 and #4 here for homework. 

 

DUE WEDNESDAY 2/15:

Read and annotate chapters 3 and 4 for class on Wednesday.  If you were absent on Friday, you need to complete these reflection questions for chapter 2. 

 

DUE TUESDAY 1/31:

Finish reading and annotating chapter 1.  The colors you need for annotating are listed below.  You also need to complete your character charts for all of the information that we learned in chapter 1.

 

green = imagery (sights, sounds, smells, tates, touch senses)

yellow = figurative language (metaphors, similes, other creative language choices)

blue = theme

orange = character development and character back story

pink = general highlighting

pen or pencil = repeated phrases and foreshadowing

 

If you missed class on 1/25:

Re read pages 1-9 and fill in your character sheets for all given information from those pages. 

 

DUE TUESDAY 1/24:

- a copy of The God of Small Things that you can write in must be in class

- your group's final, edited, research paper is due to turnitin.com by midnight. 

 

You will be complete a group research paper and group presentation on a topic that will appear in our next novel.  Here is the sheet of guidelines for you to consider when writing your research paper.  The research paper will be due January 24th by midnight to turnitin.com and the presentation needs to be completed for class on Friday January 20th. 

 

Honors contract for semester 2 is due January 18th.  Here is an additional copy if you need one.  

 

SEMESTER 2

 

Buy a copy of The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy and bring it to class by Tuesday January 24th.  You can bring it earlier and store it here.  You need a copy that you can write in and mark up. 

 

TUESDAY 12/20 FINAL IN CLASS:

 

You will type your final SCR about "Othello" on Tuesday during class.  You can choose to handwrite it as well.  You can bring in only a sticky note that will have your thesis statement and evidence on it.  You will have access to the book while you write.  The prompt is below:

Using text support answer the following prompt in short constructed response format: What role does race play in Shakespeare’s Othello?  Is it pivotal to the plot that Othello is black?

 

You will also take the second vocab quiz.  It will look identical to the first one and will cover these words:

DUE TUESDAY 12/13

Complete this short constructed response for Othello.  You will do one that is similar for the final on December 20th.  You can write it for Acts 1-5 if you, although the assignment says Act 1-4.

 

The root words quiz will be Wednesday 12/14 in class.  

 

DUE TUESDAY 12/6

Review Act 3 of "Othello".  Complete these reflection questions for Act 3 for class on Tuesday. 

 

Remember that your first vocab quiz will be on Wednesday.  You need to know how to spell, define and use each of these words for the quiz: juxtaposition, zephyr, imbue, bilk, castigate, acrimony, erudite, innocuous, immolate, euphemism, obdurate, aleatory, anachronism, circumlocution

 

If you missed class on Friday 11/18:

Finish reading Act 2 on your own.  Complete these reflection questions, they are due on 11/29. 

 

DUE TUESDAY 11/15:

Translate Act 1 of "Othello" into modern English.  Turn in to the turnitin.com dropbox by 3pm on Tuesday.  Only one partner needs to submit it but please put both partners' names on the document.  There is no reading assigned for the weekend. 

 

IF YOU WERE ABSENT ON 11/8:

Read all of Act 1 of Othello.  Come see me to get the assignment we started in class.  

 

DUE THURSDAY 11/3:

Print out a newspaper article.  Read the article and circle all the root words that you find.  You can cirlce root words that we have not learned yet.  Bring the article that you have read and circled to class on Thursday. 

 

DUE FRIDAY 10/21:

In class on Friday you will write your final analytical full essay for Their Eyes Were Watching God.  The prompt is below.  Honors students remember that your honors essay is due on Friday by midnight to turnitin.com. 

 

ESSAY PROMPT:

In a 5 paragraph analytical essay, examine the role of nature versus nurture (one’s DNA versus one’s upbringing) in developing one key theme from Zora Neal Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God.

 

DUE TUESDAY 10/18:

Finish annotating the book.  Be prepared to work hard on essay prep in class because you will be writing your final essay for this book on Friday in class.  The essay prep is not meant to be homework. 

 

Honors students: start working on your honors essay ASAP!  It is due Friday 10/21 by midnight.  Please email me or show me your thesis by Wednesday (this is required).  

 

DUE TUESDAY 10/11

Write a short constructed response to answer this prompt.  I recommend showing me your thesis statement before the weekend.  Also, be prepared to turn in your setting drawing that we did in class on Wednesday.

Annotate 16-17 for class on Friday.

Read and annotate chapters 14-15 for class on Tuesday.  If you were absent on Friday, you also need to complete these reflection questions for chapters 11-13.

Complete your music and theme analysis for class on Friday.  Share it with me at emily_broyles@dpsk12.net.  Here are the questions:

 

*1. What link do you understand between this song and a major theme of our novel?  Which theme did you choose and why did you choose it? (1 paragraph)

*2. Choose 2 quotes from the novel that support the connection you see between the novel and your song.  Include them in your google doc.  Explain the link between the two. (1 paragraph)

*3. Do you think music can help us understand the themes of this novel?  Explain. (1 paragraph)

DUE SEPTEMER 6:

Purchase and bring a copy of our first novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston to class on September 6th.  This must be a copy that you can write on and that was blank when you bought it.  I recommend using Amazon or a local book seller, where you can find copies for under $5.
